Before beginning couple counseling, ask your partner how they feel about initiating couple counseling. Make sure to carefully listen to their thoughts, feelings and concerns, so they feel a part of the process too. Communicating with each other is difficult for everyone initially. Many partners may dominate each other by threatening divorce, emotionally, mentally or physically abusing one another to maintain the unbalanced power within the relationship. Learning to communicate differently opens the door to better listening skills, and caring for one another. It creates a foundation to grow, to love, and to thrive establishing a sense of integrity, equality and balance with yourself and each other. In couples counseling one of the major goals is to gain insight into your relationship dynamics. We begin by establishing ground rules for communication; we discuss what it will take to mutually repair your relationship; how you can make positive changes and your commitment to making your relationship work. Before you consider beginning in couple counseling, think about whether you care enough about each other to take the time and energy that therapy takes to build a better relationship. Know that it is okay to reach out to ask for help. Couple counseling helps to create a safe environment where each person will not feel defensive or attacked when they perceive something that isn’t working in their relationship.
